Folding basics

These moves appear in many models. Each model’s folding screen shows them in 3D.

- - - Blue dashes: fold toward you   — — Orange dashes: fold away

Valley fold

Fold the paper toward you so the crease sinks like a valley. Shown with blue dashes.

Mountain fold

Fold the paper away from you so the crease rises like a mountain. Shown with orange dashes.

Fold and unfold

Fold to make a crease, then unfold. The crease guides later steps.

Turn over

Flip the whole paper over. The paper turns, not the camera.

Squash fold

Lift a flap, open its pocket and press it flat into a new shape.

See house step 5

Collapse (square base)

Fold several creases at once along the pre-made lines.

See crane step 4

Petal fold

Lift one layer’s point while the sides come to the center, then flatten.

See crane step 8

Inside reverse fold

Push a point between its own layers to change its direction. Pre-crease first to make it easy.
