1. Fold in half and unfold
White side up. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and unfold, then fold the left edge to the right edge and unfold.
2. Turn over
Turn over so the coloured side is up.
3. Fold both diagonals
Fold one corner to the opposite corner to make a triangle, then unfold. Repeat on the other diagonal.
4. Collapse into a square base
Turn the paper so a corner points down. Using the creases, bring the top, left and right corners down to the bottom corner and flatten.
5. Squash the right flap
Lift the top right flap upright, open its two layers and press it flat so its folded edge lies on the centre line. A coloured triangle shows above a white one.
6. Turn over and squash
Turn the model over. Squash the top right flap the same way.
7. Turn a layer, then squash
Turn the top right layer over to the left like a page. Squash the flap that is now on the right.
8. Squash the last flap
Turn over, turn one layer from right to left and squash the last flap. Every side now shows a coloured triangle above a white one.
9. Crease for the petal fold
Fold the two lower edges of the top layer to the centre line and unfold. Then fold the whole top down along the line joining the ends of those creases, and unfold.
10. Petal fold
Lift the coloured layer below the horizontal crease upwards. Its sides swing in to the centre line, and the lower edges of the white layer underneath fold in along the creases. Flatten: a small diamond appears.
11. Turn over; petal fold
Turn over. Crease the two lower edges on this side too, then petal fold the same way.
12. Turn two layers; petal fold
Turn two layers from right to left to show a side that is not folded yet. Crease it and petal fold.
13. Petal fold the last side
Turn over, turn two layers from right to left and petal fold the last side. This is the frog base.
14. Fold the small flap down
Fold the small diamond flap in the middle down along the horizontal crease. It now points down as a triangle.
15. Swivel the side flaps out
Lift the triangle flap a little and swivel the two white flaps underneath outwards. Press them flat so their upper edges sit right next to the bottom edges of the triangle, then lay the triangle back down. White shows in the middle with a coloured strip on each side.
16. Turn over; repeat
Turn over. Fold the small flap down on this side too, then lift it a little and swivel the two white flaps out.
17. Turn two layers; repeat
Turn two layers from right to left. On the new side, fold the small flap down and swivel the white flaps out.
18. Repeat on the last side
Turn over, turn two layers from right to left, and do the same on the last side: flap down, white flaps swivelled out.
19. Turn one layer on each side
Turn one layer from right to left. Turn over and turn one layer from right to left on this side too. Both sides now show a smooth face.
20. Turn it upside down
Turn the model so the open end (the future petals) is at the top and the closed point at the bottom.
21. Narrow the bottom
Fold the two lower edges of the top layer to the centre line. Each crease starts at the bottom point and runs to the side corner above.
22. Turn over; narrow
Turn over. Fold the two lower edges to the centre line on this side too.
23. Turn two layers; narrow
Turn two layers from right to left. Fold the lower edges of the new side to the centre line.
24. Narrow the last side
Turn over, turn two layers from right to left and fold the lower edges of the last side to the centre line.
25. Fold the petals down
Fold the wide petal at the top of the front side down towards you on a horizontal line. Turn over and fold the petal on the other side down the same way. The white petal with its coloured edges shows.
26. Fold the other two petals down
Turn two layers from right to left and fold the petal that appears down. Turn over, turn two layers and fold the last petal down.
27. Open the flower
Gently spread the layers around the stem so the four folded-down petals face four directions, and stand the flower up. Coloured triangles show between the petals. Your iris is done!
1. Fold in half and unfold
White side up. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and unfold, then fold the left edge to the right edge and unfold.
Tip:
Finished!
Well done! Watch it again or try another model.
Finishing touches
- Roll each folded-down petal around a pencil and let go: it curls outwards like a real iris.
- Fold it in purple or blue paper and push a straw into the hole at the bottom for a stem.
