Boat with fishbox

A traditional paper boat with a square box in the middle for the fish you catch. Fold a double boat from a square with its corners folded in, then pull out the hidden triangle and make it into the box.

Why this level: You fold the double boat from thicker, corner-folded paper, then find and pull out a triangle hidden inside. Bringing three corners to one point needs care.

Story

Children folded the boat with fishbox in European kindergartens in the 1800s. A list of kindergarten folds from 1859 names a “fisherman’s boat”, and the oldest picture we know of is in a German kindergarten book of 1876. Nobody knows who first folded it.

Did you know? An American magazine of 1889 called it a “fish boat, with receptacle for fish”.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1. Fold in half and unfold

White side up. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and unfold, then the left edge to the right edge and unfold, to make a cross of creases.

  2. 2. Fold the four corners to the centre

Fold each of the four corners to the centre point. You get a smaller square.

  3. 3. Turn it to sit square

Keep the four folded triangles facing you and turn the paper an eighth of a turn, so that its edges are at the top and bottom.

  4. 4. Fold the sides to the centre

Fold the left and right edges in to meet on the centre line, like closing two doors.

  5. 5. Crease the top and bottom

Fold the top edge and then the bottom edge to the middle, creasing well, and unfold each again.

  6. 6. Pull out the bottom corners

Fold the bottom edge up to the middle along its crease while pulling the two hidden corners out to the sides as points. Press it flat.

  7. 7. Pull out the top corners

Do the same at the top: fold the top edge down to the middle while pulling the two hidden corners out to the sides, and press flat. You get a long hexagon.

  8. 8. Fold in half behind

Mountain-fold along the middle, where the two strips meet: the top half goes behind the bottom half. Two boats now lie one behind the other.

  9. 9. Pull out the hidden triangle

Inside the front boat, along its top edge, one of the corners you folded to the centre at the start is hiding, folded up. Pull it up over the top edge and open it out: a big triangle stands on the boat.

  10. 10. Fold three corners to the middle

Fold the left end of the front boat, together with the corner of the triangle, along the upright line through the left end of the boat’s bottom, so that its point meets the middle of the top edge. Fold the tip of the triangle down to the same point, and the right end the same way. You get a square like an envelope, with the points of the back boat showing at the sides.

  11. 11. Tuck the top half into the boat

Fold the top half of the envelope down behind along the top edge of the boat, tucking it into the front boat. The bottom half stays in the middle of the hull as the fishbox.

  12. 12. Stand it up: done

Stand the boat up on its bottom edge. Your boat with a fishbox is done!
