Fukusuke (lucky doll)

Fukusuke, the Japanese good-luck doll: a big head and stiff shoulder wings (kamishimo). Draw the face with a pen.

Why this level: The corner folds are easy, but pulling the hidden flaps out for the head and folding the head down move several layers at once.

Steps at a glance

1. Fold in half and unfold
White side up. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and unfold, then fold the left edge to the right edge and unfold.
2. Fold the four corners to the centre
Fold each of the four corners to the centre point. You get a smaller diamond.
3. Fold the corners to the centre again
Without turning over, fold the four new corners to the centre point again. You get a small square.
4. Turn over; turn to a diamond
Turn over so the folded flaps are underneath. Then turn the square so one corner points up, like a diamond.
5. Fold the upper edges to the centre
Fold the upper left and upper right edges to the vertical centre line, on creases that start at the top point. The side corners meet in the middle.
6. Turn over
Turn over. The side with the double-folded corners is up.
7. Pull out the upper flaps
Swing the upper left and upper right triangular flaps outwards. Each one turns over its folded edge and lies flat outside: together they make a big diamond for the head.
8. Turn over
Turn over. The big diamond head is on top.
9. Fold the top of the head down
Fold everything above the line joining the head’s side corners down. A small diamond hidden behind comes over with it and becomes the face; pointed shoulders stick out on both sides.
10. Fold the bottom point behind
Fold the bottom point behind, on the horizontal line through the lower ends of the side flaps. Draw a face and your Fukusuke is done!
