Story

Stems and leaves to go with paper flowers are traditional folds, and nobody knows who folded them first. Several origami books and websites show stems like this one as traditional designs. A narrow diamond made by folding the edges to a diagonal is folded in half and one point is turned up: the stem and the leaf come from the same sheet.

Did you know? Stand several of them pointing up and they look like a patch of grass — that is why the same fold is also called “grass”.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1. Crease a diagonal

White side up, with a corner pointing up. Fold the bottom corner to the top corner to make a triangle, then unfold.

  2. 2. Fold the right edges to the center

One at a time, fold the two edges that meet at the right corner to the center line. It looks like a kite.

  3. 3. Fold the left edges to the center

Fold the two edges at the left corner to the center line too. You get a narrow diamond, pointed at both ends.

  4. 4. Fold in half

Fold the bottom half up along the center line. You get a long, thin triangle.

  5. 5. Raise the stem (inside reverse fold)

Push the long right point up between the layers along a slanted line through the top corner (inside reverse fold). The point standing up is the stem; the short point left over on the left is the leaf.

  6. 6. Stand it up

Turn it so the stem points straight up. Your stem with a leaf is done! Put a flower on the tip of the stem.
