Story

Nobody knows who first folded the double boat with sail. The oldest record we know of is a French handicraft textbook of 1893, and a Spanish book of 1902 shows it too. Both fold the double boat from a square with its corners folded to the middle.

Did you know? There is also a version with both hidden corners pulled up as two sails. It appears in French and Spanish books again and again from 1890 on.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1. Fold in half and unfold

White side up. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and unfold, then the left edge to the right edge and unfold, to make a cross of creases.

  2. 2. Fold the four corners to the centre

Fold each of the four corners to the centre point. You get a smaller square.

  3. 3. Turn it to sit square

Keep the four folded triangles facing you and turn the paper an eighth of a turn, so that its edges are at the top and bottom.

  4. 4. Fold the sides to the centre

Fold the left and right edges in to meet on the centre line, like closing two doors.

  5. 5. Crease the top and bottom

Fold the top edge and then the bottom edge to the middle, creasing well, and unfold each again.

  6. 6. Pull out the bottom corners

Fold the bottom edge up to the middle along its crease while pulling the two hidden corners out to the sides as points. Press it flat.

  7. 7. Pull out the top corners

Do the same at the top: fold the top edge down to the middle while pulling the two hidden corners out to the sides, and press flat. You get a long hexagon.

  8. 8. Pull up the hidden sail

In the slit along the right half of the middle line, where the two strips meet, one of the corners you folded to the centre at the start is hiding, folded up. Pull it out of the slit and lay it open upward: a big triangle, folded in half.

  9. 9. Fold in half behind

Mountain-fold along the middle, where the two strips meet: the top half of the boat goes behind the bottom half, but the triangle stays standing up. It is the sail, folded in half, with its straight upright edge over the middle of the boat.

  10. 10. Stand it up: done

Stand the boat up on its bottom edge, keeping the two boats folded together under the sail. Your double boat with a sail is done!
