Story

A paper house can lead to a little sofa. A sofa from this house-shaped base appeared in a book in 1882. Here we follow the sofa shown on an Argentine folding sheet from 1951. A wide flap becomes the seat, and the side panels make the arms and supports. Its first maker is unknown.

Did you know? The seat, back and arms are connected parts of one square. No scissors or glue are needed.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1. Fold in half

White side up. Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge.

  2. 2. Crease the center

Fold in half side to side and unfold to make a vertical center crease.

  3. 3. Fold the sides to the center

Fold the left and right edges to the center line, both layers together.

  4. 4. Squash both sides into roofs

Lift the left flap, open its pocket from below and press it flat: the outer layer goes back out to the side and the top becomes a triangle roof. Repeat on the right.

  5. 5. Fold the bottom up

In the middle, fold the front layers up along the line under the roofs. Leave the back layer where it is.

  6. 6. Raise the arms and side supports

Raise both sides forward to a right angle along the vertical creases. The triangles are the arms; the lower panels support the sofa.

  7. 7. Lower the full seat and stand it up

Bring the full middle flap forward to form a level seat. Stand the sofa upright on its side supports.
