Story

This house with its wide eaves is a traditional fold, and nobody knows who first made it. The oldest record we know of is a paper-folding book for first-graders published in Shanghai, China, in 1914, where it is design number 39, “House”. In Japan it appears in an origami book by Isao Honda in 1931, and later in books from France and the United States.

Did you know? In the 1914 book, the very next design, a monk’s hat, is made by folding this house a little further.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1. Crease the centre

White side up. Fold in half, left edge to right edge, and unfold.

  2. 2. Fold the sides to the centre

Fold the left and right edges to the centre line. The square is now in quarters, folded into a tall strip.

  3. 3. Turn the two right corners in

Inside reverse fold the top and bottom corners of the folded right edge, pushing each one in between the two layers. The slanted fold runs from the middle of the end to a point a quarter of the way along the right edge. The right corners now look cut off.

  4. 4. Ends behind, triangles in front

Fold the top quarter behind, but leave the small triangle at the top right (the front layer only) in front. Fold the bottom quarter behind the same way. The two triangles left in front become the eaves.

  5. 5. Turn it on its side

Turn the model so the side with the triangles is at the top. The top half is the roof with its eaves, the bottom half is the wall.

  6. 6. Open the side walls and stand it up

Open the two folded-back ends until they stand at right angles behind the front, as side walls. Stand the house up and it is done!
